Treasures in the Mail

After a day full of professional development presentations at NYU, I returned home to find a mailbox full of wonders. Three boxes had arrived and were left at the art shop next door so I quickly went to retrieve them. Two were from my pappy and Mare and one from my mother’s cousin and her husband, clothes and books from Arizona and fantastic school supplies from Colorado. The box sent by Granpa also had a beautiful photo album that my mom had put together chronicling our trip to South America this past spring. I also received several letters including one from Christine, one of my favorite students from this past summer. Also, I got my public library card! Needless to say, I headed straight to the Yorkville branch of the library, just a few blocks away, and picked up some much desired materials.
Our current training week has been a bit frustrating because they seem to be reviewing much of what we already went over several times in Philadelphia. Katie and I both agreed that today’s sessions, except for the guest speaker in the morning, were largely unhelpful. Still, there is only one more day so I think that I can make it. It is nice to see these familiar faces and collaborate and connect. I am so excited to know that one of my co-teachers from the summer, Mr. McKean, will be teaching the same grade-levels and ESL models as I and only a few blocks away. Even better, he literally lives around the block from my school. We have already committed to helping one another as much as possible. Sean and I know each other pretty well, our distinct teaching styles, our strengths, and definitely understand how best to communicate with one another.
I have also had the opportunity to meet the two other new TFA teachers who will be working at MS 328. They are both positive, energetic individuals and I believe I will enjoy working with them. I emailed our principal today and the three of us our hoping that we can visit the school together next week before our official school training begins on August 29th. It turns out that I know more about the school at this point than either of them do (in other words, were all pretty lost). I keep smiling and learning each day.
I’m in the middle (more towards the end) of a great book right now and hope to finish it this evening. I bought Nickel and Dimed at CostCo this summer and asked my grandpa to read it before I took it with me. He devoured in a few short days and told all his friends and neighbors that they should read it right away. It really is a great book, witty, intellectual, and poignant. The premise is that an educated journalist decides to become a low-wage earner and see how hard it is to survive on the minimum wage. It’s a quick read and reveals much about our culture and commentary. My pappy knows a good book when he reads one.
