Moving out, moving in
A gift from God – I got a ride all the way from Philly to New York yesterday with a girl from my working group. Her family lives in Long Island and it just happened that she didn’t have any one to ride with her yet. To tell you the truth, I don’t know if I would have made it to Manhattan with all my bags without her. She drove me right to my door at 1601 York Ave. I called the super of the building and got right in with two new sets of keys. They had just painted the apartment and, unfortunately, painted several cabinets and doors totally shut. I made them re-open the cabinet doors in my room before they left.
Katie showed up about an hour later after a traumatic trip on the Greyhound. The girl directly upstairs of us had already brought down the full sized bed I had purchased from her, so the two of us unpacked our suitcases and got to work. The apartment was filthy, dirt, grim, hair, and nastiness everywhere. No complaining here, though! Katie and I were just so excited to be in our new apartment that we went down the street to the pharmacy and bought spray cleaner and paper towels. Before really digging in to the cleaning work, we made a long trek (1 hour +) to Target in Brooklyn. I bought some much needed items (baggies, shampoo, conditioner, dish drying rack, etc.) and then we headed back again (this time being a lot faster because we were now aware of the weekend subway schedules).
Several people asked us where the Target was and I saw many jealous stares at our shiny white trash can. On the train ride back, we went across a bridge and had a gorgeous view of the East River, the Manhattan Skyline and Roosevelt Island. After Target, we had a major cleaning fest: refrigerator, bathtub, sinks, countertops, toilet, everything! We treated ourselves to a nice little dinner at a diner across the street, Mansion Deli. Katie and I both ended up sleeping on the full sized bed that will soon be hers (I am going to use her twin size with a trundle this year). We slept to the sounds of York Avenue and our delightful new apartment.
