Philly 05!

I just finally got my computer set up here at Temple University and am excited to weigh in on my first day of INSTITUTE. We arrived yesterday by bus from New York (a two hour trip that took about four because of all the luggage we had to load). We checked into our dorms and it turns out that most people are staying at White Hall, a fairly new dorm very close to the dinning hall and all of our activities during the day. I, on the other hand, am staying at 1300, a very new building all the way on the other side of campus. Some have complained about this less than ideal locale, but I say, "Bring it on!" I love to walk and I'm an early morning person in general so it shouldn't be a problem. After meeting my roommates, all very friendly and helpful, I spent a few hours setting up my computer to no avail. Last night I went to sleep early and slept like a log (in a very cold forest - the temp is low in these air conditioned rooms).
Just like in New York last week, I was the first one up and left before anyone else awoke in my suite of four. I made it down to the dinning hall for a leisurely breakfast and then grabbed my sack lunch (to put in my brand new TeachForAmerica lunchbox!!!) and headed for the big yellow school bus. I am teaching at the Hon. Luis Munoz Marin Elementary school this summer with 70 other corps members, all ESL or bilingual from New York City. Today was a big intro with lots of information during which I met my CMA (Corps Member Advisor) who just finished his commitment to TFA teaching third grade dual language in the Bronx. He's a very cool guy and extremely energetic. I'll be at Munoz Marin School from 7:00 am to 4:30 Monday thru Friday for the next five weeks. While we're there, we'll be teaching in teams of four (called a Collaborative) and then reviewing materials on everything from classroom management to instructional planning.
I'll be teaching 3rd grade and will begin actual classroom instruction next Tuesday. There's a lot more to talk about, of course, but we also have evening sessions and I have one to go to in just a few minutes. What an exciting time!
