Excited and Overwhelmed
My first week at MS 328 is now complete. At the end of my department meeting (Communication Arts/ESL/Bilingual), our Literacy Coach (department chair) asked us to sum up our feelings in a few words. Mine were “excited and overwhelmed” and that really is how I feel. Throughout this week I’ve realized that I am a member of an amazing team of teachers and administrators. I’ve also figured out that there is no way for me to figure out exactly what I need to do. There, in essence, is the first year teacher’s dilemma – to try and be an excellent teacher without knowing what you’re supposed to do. I keep asking other people at my school how they run their classroom and what exactly they teach, but I’m beginning to realize that I’m not teaching exactly the same thing as anybody else so I can’t just copy someone. I really have to figure out a lot of it as I go along.
Ryan and I have spent a lot of time getting our classroom organized and cleaning things up. I brought in Fantastik spray and a roll of paper towels which went a long way. We also hung up some of my calendar pictures to liven up the room. Even though we share homeroom in classroom 213, I actually only teach there one period a week. I teach most of my classes in room 215, next door, and room 331M, in the “twilight zone.” I still haven’t seen this special room, but I’ve been told that Mr. De la Rosa, the teacher with whom I will share the room, is very easy to work with and extremely artistic. I’m hoping to meet him on Tuesday and see the room at that point and help him set it up. Kristin Ofeciar, who is the homeroom teacher for 215, has been a middle school teacher for ten years and put up a ton of posters with motivational sayings.
Needless to say, I am very excited about meeting my students this coming week, but I’m also a little nervous and way overwhelmed about all I need to do to prepare. This weekend I will some time writing up plans, parent letters, surveys and more. I’ll also be making a trip to Brooklyn, watching a movie or two, and reading a few good books.
